Is Observing Lent Just a Fad

In response to yesterday’s blog, a friend asked me how I feel about people who DON’T attend church regularly but still chose to observe Lent.  Has it become like Christmas and Easter where people participate only because it’s the “popular” thing to do.

In my opinion, there’s NO DIRECT CORRELATION between attending church and an individual’s spirituality and faith.  The devil made up this lie a long time ago and for some reason we still believe it.  Going to church week after week DOES NOT make you saved. NOT going to church week after week DOES NOT damn you to hell. We are ALL sinners, saved by grace.

Are there people out there who only observe certain holidays and traditions because those around them are doing it? Sure. Why do I care? If they are participating just to be trendy, they won’t reap the benefits that come from an earnest desire to have a closer relationship with God.

Spirituality is a very personal matter and may not always be shown outwardly. We’re not to judge one another.
